DESCRIPTION
Growing Heirloom Sumter Cucumber Vegetable Garden Seeds
Non-GMO, Heirloom Sumter Cucumber Growth Habits:
Mildew- and scab-resistant Sumter cucumber plants produce straight, medium-green fruits with a white spine. When fully mature after 50 to 65 days, they measure about 5" to 6" long.
Heirloom, non-GMO Sumter cucumber plants grow best in well-draining, nitrogen-rich soil.
Sumter heirloom cucumber seeds can be directly sown into the garden once the soil has reached at least 65 degrees F. For an earlier harvest, Sumter cucumber seeds can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before you are planning to transplant them.
A trellis system is often a good idea for cucumbers, as it will help ensure proper airflow, keep the fruit off the ground, and save space by training the vines to grow vertically.
Various Uses for Heirloom Sumter Cucumber:
Sumter cucumbers are a pickling cucumber that also tastes great fresh on salads or with vegetable dip.
As cucumbers are mostly comprised of water and have caffeic acid, they have a long history of being used to treat eye puffiness.
Non-GMO Sumter Cucumber Health Benefits:
The peel of a cucumber is a good source of vitamin K and potassium. Plus, the high water and fiber content of cucumbers makes them a good food for staying hydrated and promoting healthy digestion.
When pickled, cucumbers also support healthy digestion with probiotic bacteria.
Additional Information:
A relative of squashes, pumpkins, and melons, the Sumter heirloom cucumber plant is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. A 2-year crop rotation plan for Sumter cucumbers is recommended to reduce disease pressure.
