DESCRIPTION
Growing Barletta Onion Vegetable Garden Seeds
Heirloom Barletta Onion Growth Habits:
Barletta onions are an early Italian heirloom onion variety that matures approximately 60 to 69 days after planting. The small white bulbs of Barletta onions are most often used for pickling and, they are sometimes referred to as pearl onions.
In order to bulb properly, onions are best grown in a weed-free environment with evenly moist soil. For home gardeners, Barletta onions can easily be grown in raised beds and containers thanks to their shallow root systems and minimal space requirements.
Barletta onion seeds can be directly sown in the ground at 1/4" deep and then thinned to a spacing of 2" to 6." You can also start onions indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost date.
Various Uses for Barletta Heirloom Onions:
Barletta onions have a mild onion flavor and are commonly pickled. However, the mild Barletta onion is also delicious in salads, soups, and stews. Plus, they are the perfect size for skewering to make kabobs to cook on the grill and for garnishing Gibsons and martinis.
Heirloom Barletta Onion Benefits:
Eating onions can have some surprising health benefits, including potentially lower cholesterol and better regulated blood sugar. Onions contain cancer-fighting compounds and significant amounts of vitamins C.
Home growers will often interplant onions with other crops and fruit trees to deter deer and other pests that dislike the scent of onions.
Additional Information:
Barletta onions will tolerate a light frost, and although they are short-day onions, which typically thrive in the South, they can be grown in the northern regions of the United States because of the short growth period of 60 to 69 days.
